Figure 3 displays the beak depth distribution of medium ground finches on Daphne Major, a Galapagos island. Measurements were taken in 1976 (before selection) and again in 1978 (after a severe drought). Illustrations at the bottom show the beak depths of the initial and surviving populations.

With the aid of a simple diagram, comment on the type of selection illustrated by the data shown in Figure 3.
