CAPE Applied Mathematics Unit 2 · 2018 · Paper 2 · Question 6(a)(ii)

Two particles R and T move in the same straight line. Particle R (0.4 kg) and Particle T (0.2 kg). R moving with speed 5 ms^-1 catches up with T moving with speed v ms^-1. After collision, T has speed 5 ms^-1. Impulse on T has magnitude 0.8 N.

Particle T subsequently collides and coalesces with a stationary particle of mass 0.3 kg. Calculate the speed, v_c, of the combined particles after this collision.
