CAPE Applied Mathematics Unit 2 · 2018 · Paper 2 · Question 6(a)(i)

Two particles R and T move in the same straight line. Particle R (0.4 kg) and Particle T (0.2 kg). R moving with speed 5 ms^-1 catches up with T moving with speed v ms^-1. After collision, T has speed 5 ms^-1. Impulse on T has magnitude 0.8 N.

Given that the impulse acting on T has magnitude 0.8 N, calculate the speed, v, and the loss of kinetic energy in the collision.
