CAPE Chemistry Unit 2 · 2016 · Paper 2 · Question 1(b)(i)

60 cm³ of oxygen were mixed with 10 cm³ of a gaseous hydrocarbon, X, CxHy. After exploding and cooling to room temperature, 40 cm³ of gas were left. On shaking with aqueous sodium hydroxide, 10 cm³ of oxygen remained. Combustion reaction: CxHy + (x + y/4)O2 -> x CO2 + (y/2)H2O.

Calculate the formula of the hydrocarbon, X.
