An athlete, normally living and training at sea level with a red blood cell count of 4.2 million per unit of blood, began training at 2,500 m above sea level for an event. His red blood cell count was measured monthly for six months. Table 1 shows these counts.
Taking into account the concentration of oxygen at higher altitudes, give an explanation for the change in the red blood cell count at higher altitudes.
