A pink solution of aqueous acidified potassium manganate(VII) is decolourised by the addition of ferrous(Fe²⁺) ions. The chemical equation for the reaction is MnO₄⁻(aq) + 5 Fe²⁺(aq) + 8 H⁺(aq) → Mn²⁺(aq) + 5 Fe³⁺(aq) + 4 H₂O.
Identify the oxidizing and reducing agents in the equation, and explain your answer.
