CAPE Physics Unit 1 · 2016 · Paper 2 · Question 1(b)(ii)

A car is travelling along a level road at a speed of 15 m s⁻¹ towards a set of traffic lights when the light turns red. In 0.5 seconds after seeing the light, the driver applies the brakes and brings the car to a stop at the traffic lights. Table 1 shows how the speed of the car changes from the time the driver sees that the traffic lights turn red.

Suggest a reason why the velocity remains unchanged for the first 0.5 seconds after the light turns red.
