CAPE Physics Unit 2 · 2005 · Paper 1 · Question 9(b)(iii)

A radioactive source emitting alpha, beta and gamma radiation is placed in a magnetic field directed into the page. A Geiger-Muller tube moves along a circular path from position A to position B.

If the distance from the source to the Geiger-Muller tube is about 15 cm, alpha-particles cannot be detected. Explain why.

The mark scheme is shown once you've answered.
