CAPE Applied Mathematics Unit 2 · 2017 · Paper 2 · Question 5(a)(ii)

Particles A and B of masses (m+3)\text{ kg} and m\text{ kg} are connected by a light inextensible string over a smooth pulley at the edge of a table. B hangs freely, A is on a rough table with coefficient of friction 0.36. The acceleration is 2.5\text{ ms}^{-2}. Take g = 10\text{ ms}^{-2}.

Determine the masses of the particles, A and B.
