CAPE Biology Unit 2 · 2005 · Paper 2 · Question 3(b)(i)

A 40-year-old subject participated in a 24-month endurance training programme, with adaptive muscle changes shown in Figure 5.

Calculate the percentage increase in VO2 max attained by the subject at the end of the 24-month period based on Figure 5.

  2. 3(b)(ii)Suggest why muscle fibres that increase in cross-sectional area in the first two months do not achieve further diameter increase over the remaining 22 months.[1 mark]
  3. 3(b)(iii)If muscle cells do not increase in size, suggest how muscles continue to cause an increase in VO2 max.[1 mark]
  4. 3(b)(iv)Explain why, when training ceases at 24 months, curves 's' and 'u' decline abruptly while curves 't' and 'v' decrease more slowly.[2 marks]
  5. 3(b)(v)On the graph in Figure 5, draw the letter X at the points showing the 50% VO2 max value at 18, 20, and 22 months.[1 mark]
