An experiment was conducted to observe nitrogen cycle compound interconversions. 150 cm³ of urea solution was mixed with 50 g of aerated loam soil. Ammonium, nitrite, and nitrate concentrations were semi-quantitatively determined using test strips that change color. The strips were compared to a color scale for ion concentration in ppm. The mixture was sampled for both ions at 6-hour intervals over 24 hours. Figure 1 shows the changes in ammonium and nitrite ion concentrations over this 24-hour period.
