CSEC Chemistry · May/June 2009 · Paper 2 · Question 5(c)(i)

Ammonia is used in the industrial preparation of nitric acid. Step 1: 4NH₃(g) + 5O₂(g) → 4NO(g) + 6H₂O(g) at 850 °C with Pt-Rh catalyst. Step 2: nitrogen(II) oxide is further oxidized to form nitrogen(IV) oxide. Step 3: nitrogen(IV) oxide reacts with oxygen and water to produce nitric acid.

Write balanced equations for Steps 2 and 3 to show the production of nitric acid from ammonia.

The mark scheme is shown once you've answered.
