Experiments into the fundamental nature of matter are being carried out at particle accelerator facilities. A hundred years ago, Geiger and Marsden performed the now famous gold – foil experiment at the suggestion of Rutherford.

Describe this experiment and explain how it established the nuclear structure of the atom.
