CAPE Chemistry Unit 2 · May/June 2023 · Paper 2 · Question 2(e)(ii)

Samples of two different brands of black ink are separated into their constituent parts using paper chromatography. Both samples contain a red dye. In the first sample, the solvent travels 7.54 cm while the red dye travels 4.67 cm. In the second sample, the red dye travels 3.31 cm while the solvent travels 5.34 cm.

Calculate the Rᶠ value for the red dye in EACH of the two samples.

The mark scheme is shown once you've answered.
