Maynard, a mason, cast a concrete floor. He suggested dampening the floor while it was hardening. From your knowledge of cement components and its use in concrete, explain why dampening is necessary and what may occur if the floor is not dampened.

Explain to Mr. Smith why it is necessary to dampen the concrete floor. Suggest to Mr. Smith what may occur if he decides NOT to dampen the floor.
