CAPE Chemistry Unit 1 · May/June 2024 · Paper 2 · Question 1(f)(ii)
Potassium nitrate decomposes on heating: 2 KNO3(s) -> 2 KNO2(s) + O2(g). A sample of KNO3 weighing 6.20 g (Sample A) was partially decomposed. The residue was dissolved in water to make 1 dm^3 of solution. A 25.0 cm^3 aliquot was acidified and titrated with 0.02 mol dm^-3 KMnO4, requiring an average titre of 27.50 cm^3.
Using the equation 2 MnO4^-(aq) + 5 NO2^-(aq) + 6 H^+(aq) -> 2 Mn^2+(aq) + 5 NO3^-(aq) + 3 H2O(l), deduce the number of moles of KNO2 present in the titre volume.
