Theme 5: Adjustments to Emancipation, 1838–1876

Imagine that you are the owner of a large sugar plantation in a British Caribbean territory in the 1850s with a mixed labour force primarily composed of Indians. Write a letter to a friend in England describing your efforts to secure labour, addressing the reasons planters sought immigrants after 1838, reasons for official objections in England and the Caribbean, push factors for Indian immigrants, and why India was chosen as the main source of labour.
