CAPE Applied Mathematics Unit 1 · 2013 · Paper 2 · Question 5(c)(ii)

Coffee dispensed from a machine is claimed to be normally distributed with mean 10 ounces. A sample of 8 cups gives sample mean 9.6 ounces and standard deviation 6 ounces.

Formulate suitable null and alternative hypotheses (using statistical symbols) to test whether the mean amount of coffee dispensed is 10 ounces or whether it is less than 10 ounces.
