CAPE Chemistry Unit 2 · 2006 · Paper 2 · Question 6(b)(i)

A brown solid, J, heated with concentrated sulphuric acid reacts to give a white solid, K, and a colourless, odourless gas, L, which relights a glowing splint. J reacts with aqueous manganese(II) nitrate in the presence of dilute nitric acid to give a purple solution, M. When dilute hydrochloric acid is added to M, a white precipitate, O, forms in the purple solution; O dissolves when heated and reforms on cooling. Identify EACH of J to O, and state the nature of J.
