CAPE Chemistry Unit 2 · May/June 2021 · Paper 2 · Question 1(b)(iii)

A gaseous hydrocarbon P (volume 10 cm³, formula CₓHᵧ) was mixed with 70 cm³ of oxygen and exploded. After cooling, the gaseous mixture occupied 55 cm³. After shaking with aqueous sodium hydroxide, the volume reduced to 35 cm³. The remaining gas was oxygen. All volumes were measured at constant pressure. The combustion equation is CₓHᵧ + (x + y/4)O₂ → x CO₂ + y/2 H₂O.

Outline the reaction mechanism for the reaction of P with liquid bromine, using appropriate notations and equations.
