The ABO blood grouping system is determined by antigens on the surface of red blood cells. An individual with one parent with heterozygous blood group A and the other parent with heterozygous blood group B may have a different blood group from either parent.

With the aid of a genetic diagram, explain how an individual may have a blood type that is different from either parent.
