Question 7 is based on three documents concerning Haitian revolutionary leaders' attempts to create a free society between 1804 and 1825. Document I contains a speech by Jean-Jacques Dessalines on independence and the expulsion of whites. Document II describes the fortress Citadelle Laferrière constructed under Henri Christophe. Document III provides clauses from the Imperial Constitution of Haiti (1805) abolishing slavery and barring white property ownership.

With reference to Document I, discuss the extent to which Dessalines fulfilled the promise made in his statements “...I shall make you independent. There will be no more whites among us.”
